Fresh Apple Juice at Home

Making your own apple juice is super easy to make and takes only 3 ingredients. We have a 2-year-old daughter that loves it so we are constantly buying apples to juice. So much in fact that we bought a juicer.

Store-bought apple juice contains all kinds of preservatives, chemicals, and additives. Sometimes so much that is in fact not apple juice anymore. When you make it at home, you know exactly what is in it. Preserving it is easy too. Just freeze it!

If you do want to buy a juicer we use this one, a Braun, and I highly recommend it. It’s not the cheapest but it works well and will last forever. And it comes apart for easy cleaning. There are other brands available that are just as good, if not better, but I would recommend not cheaping out. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Why Make Fresh Apple Juice?

There’s really not too much to this recipe. It’s only a couple of ingredients and four steps/ And while this is for apple juice, the same recipe can apply to any juice.

Fresh apple juice is just as sweet as store-bought. The reason is is that the major manufacturers remove the flavors and sugars then add them back in to get a consistent flavor. While this makes sense when you are producing millions of bottles a year, in your own home you can enjoy an all natural flavor without and additives. And it’s cheaper too.

We add water because it is almost too sweet, but you can adjust the amount of water according to your tastes.

When choosing apples, it doesn’t matter what kind you use. If you like sweet, try red apples. For sour lovers, get some green apples. You can ever try experimenting and mixing different types. Of course the apples don’t have to look perfect, but still try to get nice firm ones.

At least with my juicer, I recommend quartering the apples before juicing. This helps to make the juicing easier and is easier on the juicer. You might have a better one than us though the can handle whole apples. Also, after every few apples, or when you start seeing less juice come out, check if the pulp needs to be cleaned. I fill the half liter cup that came with my juicer then make sure there is no pulp anywhere it doesn’t need to be.

Ingredients

  • 2 kg Apples
  • 1 Liter Filtered Water
  • 1 Stick Cinnamon (optional)

Materials

  • Juicer
  • Fine Mesh Filter of Cheesecloth

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Juice all of the apples. All juicers are different so follow the instructions for your particular model.
  2. Filter the juice through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. This is not necessary but I like it because it makes a cleaner-looking product. If you don’t mind the floaty bits of pulp, then skip this step.
  3. Put the juice into a pot with the cinnamon stick and bring to a boil. This is another step that is not necessary but it will help kill any bacteria and make your juice last longer.
  4. Add filtered water to the hot juice and remove the cinnamon stick. You can store the juice in anything you want. We keep almost every glass bottle that comes into our house, and like recycling wine bottles for juices.
